Today, no fashionable woman can do without a beautiful nail design. Manicures have become an integral part of every woman's beauty ritual. To create the perfect manicure, craftsmen use a nail drying lamp. This simple and quick process ensures that gel nail polish lasts for weeks, thus significantly reducing the time spent on nail care.

What is a lamp for a manicure?

A nail lamp is a tool used to cure nail polish, gels, biogels and other materials used in modern manicure.
Inside the lamp there are light sources with a UV spectrum, which generate a special light emission. Thanks to this radiation, the manicure materials cure in seconds or minutes, which saves time and increases the productivity of the craftsman.
The nail lamps are available in different models and configurations, depending on the needs and characteristics of the job. They can be portable or stationary, with different number of lamps, power and other parameters.
Using a nail lamp gives you a perfect and long-lasting manicure result, as well as protecting the nail plate from damage and weakening.

Manicure lamp types

There are the following types of manicure lamps on the market today:

  1. Ultraviolet (UV);
  2. LED (UV/LED);
  3. Cold Cathode Gas Lamps (CCFL).
  4. Hybrid (LED/CCFL);

1. UV nail lamp. These UV lamps operate on the basis of ultraviolet rays and provide long-lasting fixation of nail coverings such as gel polish, gel, biogel, gel paint and acrylics for nail extension. The UV lamps are equipped with UV light bulbs which can be easily replaced if necessary. They are great for use at home or in a professional environment. Also, these lamps are available at a very favourable price.

UV lamps are the pros:

  • The most economical option;
  • Simple menu navigation, which makes it easy to control all functions;
  • A variety of models are available with different designs, shapes and wattages;
  • Suitable for experienced craftsmen and hobbyists alike;
  • Suitable for curing long-lasting coats, except for LED-curing and for nail extensions;

UV-lamps - disadvantages:

  • give off light that negatively affects the eyes;
  • long curing of gel polish (1-2 minutes);
  • strongly heated;
  • the highest quality, most expensive lamps are designed for a maximum of 10,000 hours;

2. LED/UV nail lamp. Devices of this type also work with ultraviolet rays, but as a result of LEDs. This light source is considered more economical in energy consumption, environmentally friendly and less heated during operation. LED-lamps are more modern lamps, which are suitable for both home and professional use.

LED/UV lamps - pluses:

  • Low electricity consumption;
  • It has an incredibly fast drying time of only 10-60 seconds. This is 4 times faster than the time required for curing with UV lamps;
  • No harm to the skin or eyes;
  • These devices practically do not heat up, which is an advantage;
  • Lifetime of the light sources is 10,000 hours or even more;

LED/UV lights - disadvantages:

  • Expensive and difficult to repair;
  • Lamps are not versatile. There are coatings that do not cure under LEDs. It is known that the luminescence spectrum of LEDs is 390-405 nanometres. This is not enough to polymerize solid gels for nail extensions. Therefore, when buying materials for such a lamp, you need to look carefully at the packaging, which should necessarily be written LED.

3. CCFL nail lamp. These nail lamps contain a lamp with a glass bulb filled with mercury. All types of long-term coatings can be dried in these lamps, except LED-cured ones.

CCFL lamps - pluses:

  • Dry any kind of long-lasting coatings, except LED-curing coatings;
  • Have no harmful effect on the eyes;
  • These devices are practically not heated, which is an advantage;
  • Speed of gel lacquer curing up to 1 minute;

CCFL lamps - disadvantages:

  • They do not get hot during operation;
  • Repairs can be unprofitable;

4. LED+CCFL nail lamp. The name implies that these lamps combine LED and CCFL technology. They can thus cure any long-lasting material. Polymerisation under the LED+CCFL takes 30-60 seconds. Manicure lamps are very popular with craftsmen who work with a huge number of clients.

LED+CCFL lamps - pluses:

  • Polymerisation in less than 1 minute;
  • Dries any long lasting coating;
  • No harm to eyes or skin;
  • Can be used in any mode;

LED+CCFL-Lamps - disadvantages:

  • Most expensive;
  • Ideal for use in the salon, but do bear in mind that their cost is quite high;
  • Replacing light sources can sometimes be as expensive as buying a new device;

Are manicure lamps dangerous?

Many fashionistas visiting salons for manicure treatments worry about how safe a lamp is for drying nail coatings. High doses of UV radiation are harmful to the skin, but salons use UV lamps to dry nail extensions quickly. However, the amount of UV radiation in nail lamps is so low that it is unlikely to be harmful to health. According to the American Cancer Foundation, the risk of getting cancer when using a nail drying lamp is minimal. It's important to remember that skin cancer is not a major risk in a manicure procedure.

A word of advice: To protect your hands from UV rays when you visit the beauty salon, you can apply sunscreen 20 minutes before the treatment. Not only will this approach reduce the risk of sunburn and pigmentation, it will also help keep your skin young and healthy for years to come. Don't forget this simple but effective way to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun at any time of year!
