What goes on first – nail primer or base coat?
Primer and Base Coat — Two Products Often Confused with Each Other. However, it's important to understand that they serve different purposes, even though both are applied to the nails and help ensure the longevity of a manicure. Global Fashion will help you understand the difference between a primer and a base coat, and explain how to use them correctly to achieve the perfect result.

What is a Nail Primer

A primer is applied to the nail plate to prepare it before applying gel or acrylic. As the name suggests, the primer acts as a foundation, ensuring strong adhesion between the natural nail and the artificial material.
It is used after dust removal, which occurs during filing. The primer is applied in a thin layer, dries quickly in the air, and does not require curing under a lamp.

Primers can be acid-based, acid-free, or ultrabond.

Acid-based primer is one of the most effective products for ensuring strong adhesion between the coating and the natural nail plate. It not only disinfects the nail surface but also removes excess oil, including sebum.
Within 3–4 minutes after application, the primer begins to work: it opens the micropores in the nail plate, creating ideal conditions for gel or other materials to penetrate.
Thanks to its dehydrating properties, an acid-based primer significantly improves adhesion and increases the durability of the manicure.

Acid-free primer is a product that does not contain acids but performs the same functions as an acid-based primer: it ensures strong adhesion of the material to the natural nail plate. It is especially recommended for use with compatible gels and UV gels, which are labeled as suitable for use with an acid-free primer.
Ultrabond (acid-free primer) is widely used in manicures and acts as a double-sided adhesive layer. It provides excellent adhesion between the gel and the nail plate, preventing air from getting between the cuticle and sidewalls, which helps avoid gel lifting. This primer is particularly useful in gel polish manicures, as it is recommended during the nail preparation stage to improve adhesion. It is also indispensable for nail extensions using forms or tips, ensuring a reliable and long-lasting bond between the natural nail and the artificial material.

What is a base coat for nails?

Nail base is a special product that provides reliable protection for the nail plate and creates excellent adhesion with gel polish, acting as a primer but with additional beneficial properties. It absorbs quickly into the nail, strengthens it, and helps extend the durability of the manicure. The curing time of the base in an LED or UV lamp typically takes 2-3 minutes. It is especially important for those with sensitive nails prone to brittleness, as it protects them from the pigments found in gel polishes and gels. This helps prevent damage and enhances the longevity of the manicure.

What is applied first - primer or base coat?

The difference between a primer and a base coat is that the primer is applied first, preparing the nail plate, dehydrating it, and improving adhesion to subsequent layers. The base coat is applied after the primer and serves as protection for the nails, preventing the pigments from gel polish or UV gel from affecting the nails, as well as improving the durability of the manicure.
