Filing your nails isn’t the most difficult procedure, but using the wrong technique can ruin the entire manicure. In our new article, we share the five most common mistakes when filing nails and provide tips on how to avoid them, keeping your nails healthy and your manicure perfect.
Filing “back and forth”
Filing your nails “back and forth” damages the edges, leaving microscopic cracks. To keep your nails healthy and smooth, file in one direction only—from the edge toward the center.
Filing wet nails
Wet nails are softer and more pliable than dry ones, which increases the risk of damage—splitting, cracking, or delamination. Even if you manage to avoid these problems, the nail edge may remain uneven, and the longevity of your polish may decrease. To prevent this, wait 10–15 minutes after prolonged contact with water to let excess moisture evaporate. Then, be sure to degrease the nail surface using alcohol or nail polish remover—this will prepare it for perfect polish application.
Acting spontaneously
A good manicure starts with a well-thought-out plan. Decide on the nail shape in advance, and choose the length and curve that suit you, so the result looks harmonious and neat.
Using the wrong tools
For natural nails, glass nail files are the optimal choice. They provide a particularly gentle and careful effect thanks to their fine grit, preventing damage and splitting. Meanwhile, metal files are better suited for acrylic and gel nails, where more intensive filing is required.
Hold your hand palm facing away
If you have ever had a manicure in a salon, you are probably used to holding your hand with the palm facing away, as this is most convenient for the technician. However, when filing your nails yourself, it is much more comfortable to hold your hand the other way around. In this position, you have better control over the angle of the file and can see exactly how much length you are removing, making the process neater and safer for your nails.
