Why is the red manicure the most sought after and most popular?
Red manicure never goes out of fashion. Despite how quickly nail trends change, red manicure always remains at the peak of popularity. Recently, there is another reason to love this manicure colour: right now, the "red nail theory" is gaining popularity on TikTok.

The history of red nails

Manicure is usually associated with women, and we are used to thinking of it as an exclusively feminine activity. However, if we look into history, we will see that many centuries ago men painted their nails red. Yes, yes, men! They used natural dyes, as apparently nail polishes didn't exist back then. Men painted their nails to emphasise their social status. The wealthiest painted their nails red, while the less wealthy chose green.

In ancient Egypt, red manicure was the prerogative of only pharaohs and queens, i.e. people of high status. After the death of the ruler, the fingertips of mummies were also coloured red, as it was believed that this would allow the pharaohs to enter the afterlife with all their power. The red manicure trend from Ancient Egypt travelled to China, but with some modifications. Emperors of the Ming Dynasty preferred to wear false, very long nails painted bright scarlet. This manicure was not so much a tribute to beauty as a demonstration of their high origin and lack of need for physical labour.

Red nails disappeared from fashion for about 300 years, but experienced a comeback in the early 20th century. In the 1920s, with the advent of modern nail polish, the colour red regained popularity. Brands such as Revlon began producing polish available to the general public, and red nails became a symbol of Hollywood glamour. Film stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth made red nails their distinctive style, cementing their reputation as a symbol of sexiness and femininity.

In the 1950s and 1960s, red nails became a must-have for fashionistas and were actively used in advertising campaigns. At this time, they began to be perceived not only as an element of the evening image, but also as part of everyday style.

In the 90s, red manicure gained incredible popularity, and this is largely thanks to Princess Diana. It was on the evening of Charles' confession of infidelity that she first appeared in public with a red manicure. Since then, this manicure became her trademark and remained so until her death.

Today, red nails remain a classic choice associated with confidence and elegance. Modern technology has made it possible to create different textures and shades, but the classic red nail polish still holds a special place in the hearts of women around the world. It remains an enduring symbol of strength, femininity and style, reflecting the uniqueness of each era and culture.
